Tonight the United States beat the Dominican Republic by a score of 2-1. I want to congratulate both teams on a well played game it was very entertaining to watch. Both teams had excellent pitching highlighted by their bullpens who pitched most of the game for both teams. While yes some of the calls by the umpires were not good especially behind the plate both teams had opportunities that they did not capitalize on. And that was the reason that the DR lost this game. Not capitalizing on situations that they should have capitalized on.
Both starting pitchers did not go very deep but they did what they needed to do they both pitched very well. Both giving up one run in their starts. All the runs were scored on solo home runs. On Paul Skenes one bad pitch in the game, a hanging slider to Junior Caminero, Caminero capitalized on this mistake by taking the hanging off speed pitch and taking him deep to left field to put the DR up 1-0. Gunnar Henderson then hit a lead off solo home run against the DRs starting pitcher Luis Severino who also pitched an excellent game. This was followed up two batters later by Roman Anthony who hit another solo shot against Gregory Soto. That sums up all the scoring for the whole game as was said this was very much a whoever’s pitchers make less mistakes wins the game.
Both teams pitchers pitched awesome the US just made one less mistake than the DR did. If the US wants to win the championship either against Italy or Venezuela they need to be able to capitalize on situations. In the third the US had runners in scoring position with one out and they did not score. This cannot happen as both Italy and Venezuela are able to put runs up on a team in a hurry. The US can win if their pitchers keep pitching like how they have been and if their hitters are better situationally.
