Bam Adebayo my goodness 83 points in a single game is insane. This is the response that I had to seeing this. His 83 points puts him second all time in single game points scored passing Kobe Bryant’s 81 point performance and just short of Wilt Chamberlin’s 100 point record. Bam’s 83 points came against the Wizards and with his performance instead of everyone congratulating him many people have used how he got there to try and diminish his accomplishment.
BUT WHY?
Well the reason for this is because he shot 43 free throws in the game and many felt that by the end of the game he was stat padding. The heat instead of taking him out of the game left in there to go for the record after already having 70 points with nine minutes left in the game. Many members of the media feel that this is wrong and that it shouldn’t count. My question for them is why does it matter how? I mean if he cheated and had a clear advantage because of the cheating then yeah it would make sense to discredit it. But he didn’t he just played the game and the Wizards were trying to stop him and so they fouled him a lot. If you want to say that he stat padded then fine that is true but let’s not act like Kobe didn’t stat pad in his 81 point game performance.
Kobe in his 81 point game had the help of the lakers to reach that. Much in the same way that Bam had help from the heat to get to his 83 points. In the last seven minutes of the game that Kobe played in he shot every single shot. Is this not stat padding as well? Am I missing something here?
THE WIZARDS
While yeah the Wizards are one of the worst teams in the league with only 16 wins on the season who cares who he did it against. No one else in the league has put up 62 points in three quarters against them. Bam can only play who is in front of him he has no control and should be giving it his all no matter who he plays against.
WHY DIMINISH
I believe that there is a reason for this. Bam was not supposed to break it. Had it been Lebron or Curry or Luka no one would be batting an eye at it no matter how they broke it. Bam is not known to put up a lot of points and so instead of praising him many members of the media are going to try and bring it down to make people who do score a lot look better.
Quite frankly I like that it was Bam who scored it, it brings a kind of relief to the NBA. Instead of focusing on only certain players or teams they are now having to talk about Bam Adebayo, who while recognized as one of the better players in the league does not draw the media like a Lebron or Tatum. This expands the league and makes it more enjoyable to focus on other players.
CONCLUSION
I personally wouldn’t have cared if he made all his points on free throws this is an accomplishment and should be celebrated. We can all look back at great moments in any sport and find a way to diminish it. Records are meant to be broken and should be celebrated when they do break. In my opinion if you sit there and try and diminish greatness because you didn’t like the way that they broke it or you feel like it brings down the integrity of the game then perhaps you shouldn’t be watching sports.
