A new rule put in place by the NBA could make it so some superstars do not win awards which in previous years they would have. While it is difficult for us as fans who do not play the game of basketball cannot understand how much they go through physically we can still have our opinion.
The reason that some fans say this is a good thing is because so many superstars have resorted to taking a lot of time off to get their bodies right. When this happens they do not get to see our favorite players play the game. Some fans spend their hard earned money to watch just one game with their favorite players and they decide to take the game off. This can really hurt that hardworking fan who spent lots of money to see them.
While the game of basketball is a very physically tiring game, isn’t this why they train in the offseason. To get ready for the 82 game season and to try and play and win as many games as possible. Now I am not saying that they need to kill themselves playing for our benefit they should be trained up enough to play at least 65 games a year. Now injuries do happen and taking time off makes sense for that not playing because you are too tired is for a lack of a better word just plain laziness and selfish. Every other sport has this rule as well you must play a certain amount of games to be eligible for awards. In baseball you can’t even lead in certain stats without having a certain number of innings pitched or at bats per game.
The question that I have is why should basketball be the exception to this rule? What makes them so special that they shouldn’t have to play 80% of the games and should still get rewarded for that. It is kind of difficult to say that player x is better than player y but player x didn’t play nearly as many games. Playing the game of basketball is a dream that many children grow up wanting to do with their lives only the special few get to play at this level and get paid millions of dollars to do so. 80% of games I feel like is not an astronomical amount of games to play in a season.
