Introduction

Bo Nix a quarterback that has split the media and fans on whether or not he is truly a good quarterback. As a Broncos fan myself I have watched every game that Nix has played very closely. With me being a Broncos fan I may seem biased in my takes for him, but I try to stay impartial and only use what I have seen and stats to truly understand if he is good or not, and not just my own bias for the team. 

The Good

Bo Nix has been a quarterback in the NFL for two years now and has played both seasons with the Broncos. While he was a first round pick many people did not think he should have been. The Broncos in the 2024 draft took Nix 12th overall in the first round of the draft. From day one Payton has said that he has been the guy that he wanted and has proved that every step of the way with him. In both seasons Nix has led his team to double digit wins and playoff berths, this season ending in the AFC championship game. This coming after the Broncos hadn’t made the superbowl since the year they won the super bowl in 2015. 

Bo Nix’s stats are very good with 7,706 yards and over 50 total touchdowns in his first two seasons. Those stats are very good for a player in his first two years leading all his fellow draftees in those categories. Also to mention he has the most wins out of any quarterback drafted in the 2024 draft. His rookie year he led a Broncos team that was projected last in the AFC west to ten wins and a wildcard berth as the 7th seed. Then in his second year he led the Broncos to the number one seed in the AFC and their first playoff win since 2015. He did end up breaking his ankle in the AFC divisional game where he led them to a win and then lost in the AFC championship game. 

Bo Nix’s stats are pretty good and his team accolades are very good for someone only two years into his playing career. The things that he does very well though that are not in the stats is his ability to avoid sacks and his ability to come back late in games when down. His mobility not only in the run game but in the way he can avoid sacks is a huge reason for why the Broncos were so good this year. And of course the offensive line led by Garrett Bolles and Quinn Meinerz was one of the best in the NFL. But when a guy would get through that did not mean they could get a sack. Nix’s ability to extend plays beyond where they should have been, allowed his wide receivers to get open and he could hit them. 

The comebacks that the Broncos had this year were led by the Broncos quarterback Bo Nix. The Broncos had some of the most comeback wins this year including a 33 point quarter to beat the Giants. Nix’s ability to stay calm even when he makes a mistake and when they are down a lot helped lead the Broncos to many wins this year. His poise is in my opinion his best ability that he has. These points I made are his best abilities in the game of football but like any quarterback he does have some flaws. 

The Bad

While Nix’s stats are very good for a quarterback in his first two years the one stat I didn’t mention were his interceptions. Nix in his first two years has a total of 23 interceptions and four fumbles lost. While this isn’t the turnover machine that some quarterbacks are, these aren’t the best numbers and the hope is that Nix in his third year will bring down his interceptions from the first two years. The interceptions aren’t a terrible thing but the defense cannot always bail you out and he needs to bring the turnovers down. 

The other thing that he needs to work on for year three is his accuracy. At least twice a game this year we would see two throws that you just yelled at the screen how did you miss that guy. A 64.8 completion percentage is not bad but it could be higher and should be higher for a guy like Nix whose whole thing was accuracy. This is his biggest issue and needs to be corrected because some games should have been put away by himself. Now that isn’t to say that he is super inaccurate; he has a lot of good throws but also has a lot of bad throws throughout games. 

Conclusion

To say that Bo Nix is a bad quarterback like one Shady McCoy is just ignorance and shows a lack of watching football games. I don’t think that he is the best quarterback in the league either. I think he is borderline top ten in the category which is very good. To say he is bad or to say he is the best in the league are both just not the right statements to make. He is a good quarterback and can make a lot of big plays with his legs as well. He is a game manager who can make the big play when it matters, and to be honest that is just what the Broncos need for their team.
